GRIEVANCE, DISCIPLINE & DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

Synopsis

The Grievance, Discipline & Dismissal Procedures training course provides an overview of the law, gives best management practice and offers an opportunity to tackle current issues in a confidential setting. To anchor the learning and winning behavior, this course incorporates; case studies and interactive exercises. The intensive two-day training course will enable participants to manage disciplinary, grievance and dismissal procedures effectively. The emphasis is on the use of a structured approach where positive action and problem-solving is highlighted as a priority. The course will build knowledge, skill and confidence in handling these areas objectively, fairly and appropriately in line with internal policies/procedures, best practice and legal requirements. Participants will receive an action biased course content that will equip them with the fundamental knowledge to be able to manage discipline, grievance and dismissal issues.

Topics & Modules Covered Include:

• Understand key laws and practices relating to discipline, grievances and dismissal
• Know how to handle difficult situations effectively
• Manage grievances either formally or informally, as appropriate
• Take disciplinary action in a timely and appropriate manner
• Prepare and conduct investigations into alleged incidents in the workplace
• Adopt effective questioning techniques and active listening
• Distinction between a minor infringement, a major infringement and gross misconduct
• The follow-up: letters; appeals; record keeping;
• Understand the difference between termination and dismissal
• Dismissals: the legal grounds for dismissal; the dismissal process; the appeals process and what to do if it goes wrong!

Key Learning Outcomes:

• Have a full understanding of grievance, disciplinary and dismissal processes
• Have an understanding of how to have difficult conversations with team members who are under-performing, have high sickness levels and who have lodged grievance against people or processes
• Be able to investigate grievance and disciplinary issues
• Demonstrate the key skills of questioning, listening, recording and summarizing both verbally and in writing
• know how to prepare for, carry out and report on an investigation and disciplinary interviews
• Conduct disciplinary interviews and dismissals that will be procedurally correct, impartial and result in equitable and fair treatment
