Learnerships: ‘The only show in town’

Current show until June 2026

For many employers and businesses, learnerships are currently ‘the only show in town’. Aside from costs and time spent, learnerships are a good thing, and when done correctly, registered learnerships offer benefits beyond increased productivity – there is ample evidence of a return on investment (ROI) from work-based training.

The catch, however, is that the benefits last as long as the employee or learner remains in their job for the learnership duration period.

What are the benefits?

For individuals, learnerships are a fantastic opportunity to obtain invaluable, practical on-the-job work experience all while earning a stipend and pursuing a professional qualification. Learnerships often lead directly to employment, either with the employer or within the industry.

For employers, aside from TAX breaks and BEE points, sponsoring and offering learnerships is a feasible and effective route to support organisational growth, enhance skills and introduce fresh ideas. Learnerships are open to all staff levels, from new hires to senior roles, and have a significant impact on customer satisfactions and business performance.

SETA Learnerships

Learnerships present a win-win situation: companies acquire the competent staff they need, and learners gain the experience and qualifications that set them up for a successful career. The exponential increase in learnership graduates in South Africa demonstrates that companies, learners, and the nation as a whole recognise the value of learnerships.
